Privacy policy

Draft pending legal review. This text describes how Yakkery is built to work; it is not yet a binding agreement.

What we store

  • Your account: email, hashed password or sign-in provider, handle, profile, birthdate (used only for age protections).
  • What you post, react to, follow, and bookmark, the posts you ask to see less of on For You, and the messages you send.
  • If you download the extension beta, when you accepted its terms, what you confirmed, and which version you downloaded.
  • Addresses of pages members had the Yakkery panel open on, with tracking parameters and sign-in codes removed. Not your browsing history: while its panel is closed the extension sends nothing about the pages you visit, unless you turn on the optional icon badge described below.
  • IP addresses in sign-in and rate-limit logs, deleted after 30 days.
  • The browser and device you sign in from, so you can see your signed-in devices and spot a sign-in that was not you. The full browser identifier is deleted after 30 days; the plain description of it (“Chrome on Windows”) stays with that sign-in record.

The browser extension

  • No page address leaves your browser unless you open the sidebar on that tab or use a right-click action on that page.
  • The optional icon badge sends a 5-character hash prefix, never the address.
  • Presence is opt-in, visible only to others who opted in, expires after 90 seconds, and is never written to disk.
  • While the sidebar is open, it sends the address of the tab you are looking at, with sign-in and reset codes removed, and nothing else from the page. The page's content is never read or uploaded from your browser, except a passage you choose to quote — which is sent with up to 64 characters either side of it, so the quote can still be found if the page is re-laid-out.

Messages

Direct messages are private but not end-to-end encrypted. Staff can only read them when investigating a report, and every access is logged with a reason.

AI processing

Public page content fetched by YakkeryBot, site descriptions, and public posts are sent to our AI provider to write descriptions, categorize sites, screen reports, and answer Ask questions. Direct messages are not.

No trackers

No third-party analytics, advertising pixels, or fingerprinting on the website or in the extension.

Age

Yakkery is for people 13 and older. If the birthdate given during sign-up is under 13, the account is not set up, and the sign-up record (email and name) is deleted after 30 days.

How long we keep things

  • Data exports are downloadable for 7 days, then deleted.
  • Notifications are deleted 180 days after they arrive once you have read them, and after 365 days if you never do.
  • When you delete your account it is hidden right away and permanently deleted after 30 days. Until then you can sign in and cancel.
  • On permanent deletion we remove your profile, posts, messages, reactions, follows, lists, bookmarks, media and sign-in records. Public posts that other members quoted stay inside their quotes, attributed to "Deleted member". Groups you created pass to another member.
  • Moderation records (reports, actions and appeals) are kept while your account is open, so that account standing and appeals work. After your account is deleted they are attributed to "Deleted member" and removed one year after the record was made.
  • Expired sign-in sessions are removed. On sign-in records, IP addresses and full browser identifiers are cleared after 30 days. For a session that is still signed in, the browser identifier is kept while the session lasts, because it is what your signed-in devices list shows you; signing that device out, or the session expiring, removes it.

Your rights

Export everything or delete your account from settings. Optional features (presence, badge, digest email) are based on your consent and can be turned off any time. The legal basis for everything else is providing the service you signed up for.
